The arrest was for DUI, and Ray was pulled over around 3 am after he was observed speeding and not using the proper equipment when making a turn. Once the officer turned the lights on the patrol car on to pull Buchanan over Ray did not immediately stop, but continued driving initially. When Buchanan finally did stop for the officer he pulled across a number of lanes of traffic, and proceeded to stop on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic. The officer quickly noticed the smell of alcohol on Ray and placed the former football great under arrest.
Once Ray Buchanan arrived back at the police station a breathalyzer test was performed, and the result was a reading of 0.091. Under the law in Georgia anything above 0.08 is considered driving under the influence. Buchanan was booked on charges of speeding, DUI, and improper turning, and he was released within hours when he posted bond in the amount of $2,319. Ray is not the only past or current Atlanta Falcon member to face criminal charges lately, there are two current members who also recently had legal problems, one for DUI just like Buchanan. Many professional football players seem to have issues with alcohol or drugs, and some say that the physical toll of the game only increases these problems. Hopefully Ray Buchanan will seek substance abuse treatment so this does not happen again in the future.
