Whether you have made a resolution to stop drinking after the ball drops or you are already in recovery and you want to stay that way through 2013 this goal does not have to be difficult. It is important to remember all of the reasons that you want to stay sober, and all of the ways that substance abuse affects your life and loved ones. Make a list of reasons, and then look at this list every time you are tempted to relapse. This step can help you keep focused on why you do not want to go back to your old ways.
For many the end of the year holidays are very tough to get through. Often substance abuse is started again in order to overcome negative emotions and spiritual wounds that seem more pervasive during the season. Going back to drinking or drugs is not the answer though, and will make things worse instead of helping. Consider everyone who loves you and wants you to succeed, and why they are important. Avoid situations where your preferred substance is available, whether you are trying to quit smoking cigarettes, alcohol, or street drugs. You should also understand the triggers that can lead to backsliding so that you know when you are more vulnerable. These can be emotions such as anger or sadness, or physical symptoms including hunger and tiredness.
