recovery during the holidays, sober holidays

If you are a recovering addict then the holidays can be very problematic, but they do not have to be. There are some tips and steps that can help you completely avoid a relapse without becoming a shut in or losing all social contact. The holidays are a time for special events, family gatherings, and larger than normal relapse risks. There are ways that you can stay sober without missing out on all of the joy and togetherness that this time of year can bring. One thing that can help is to put in an appearance but do not stay a long time at any event. If you arrive fashionably late, spend a decent time, and then leave early because you are rushed for time and must take care of other matters no one will feel slighted, In fact just showing up may earn you brownie points and your early departure will probably not even be noticed.

If the temptation to relapse is strong then go to a 12 step meeting or call your sponsor. Either of these steps can help you avoid sliding back into your old ways and keep you on the road to recovery. Many 12 step organizations schedule numerous events around the holidays to offer added support and allow socializing without temptation. These events are normally attended by others who are recovering. This can help you get through the toughest times of the year without falling back into substance abuse. Make sure that you have plenty of time to relax and sleep, because being tired may cause you to relapse more quickly.
