Substance abuse can cause many problems, and one that most people do not consider is the dangers that they face when they abuse drugs or alcohol. Rape and sexual assault are common when drinking or drug use occurs, and you may not even be aware that you are assaulted right away. Many individuals of both sexes have gone out for a night of drinking or went to a party and then they wake up the next morning not sure exactly what happened. The use of certain drugs to lower inhibitions or even cause unconsciousness is also a big problem. If you must go somewhere to drink then never leave your drink attended, and use the buddy system so that a friend keeps track of you and vice versa.
What should you do if you have been the victim of a sexual assault or suspect that this may have occurred while you were unconscious? Many report that their first instinct is to take a bath, but this could destroy evidence. Call 911 immediately and report what happened. You may need to be medically examined so that evidence can be taken and any signs of trauma can be documented. If this has happened to you then you need to know that you are not alone. Many victims do not come forward out of fear that they caused the attack, and men are even more hesitant especially when assaulted by another man. Medical treatment is needed if you have been sexually assaulted, and there may be medications that can be prescribed that will greatly lower the risk of any pregnancy or the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
