Some basic statistics about how drug use has been growing in Florida is shown below.
Often called the Sunshine state Florida has seen a big increase of drug trafficking and abuse in the last few decades. Almost 18 million people live in Florida, and the capital city of the state is Tallahassee. 85% of the crimes committed in the state are property crimes, many caused by drug abuse and addiction. The state is surrounded on three sides by water and is a peninsula, which makes it easy for drug smugglers to bring drugs in by boat through the Gulf of Mexico. In addition drugs are brought into Florida in many other ways as well, including land and air. This state has an average crime rate this is 22% more than the average national crime rate.
Marijuana and cocaine are both common drugs in Florida. Cocaine is brought in from both Mexico and South American countries including Colombia and Bolivia. The state of Florida is then used as a shipping point for the cocaine, so the drug can be sent across North America. Heroin is also widely trafficked in Florida, and passes through the state to other states in the eastern USA although the incidence of actual heroin use still remains relatively low when compared with other states. The abuse of prescription medication is also a big problem in Florida.
Methamphetamine use and the labs used to make this drug are on the rise, and this drug poses special dangers to state residents. MDMA is also readily available, and marijuana is grown in the state as well as being smuggled in from other states and countries. More than 280,000 residents are currently on probation, and the prison population of Florida is more than 85,000 individuals. There are around 6,900 arrests for DUI each month, and around 450 deaths each month caused by alcohol. There is an average of around 9,000 drug arrests each month, with around 90 deaths caused by an overdose of drugs.
In Florida marijuana possession up to 20 grams is considered a misdemeanor, and the sentence can range from probation up to 1 year in jail and a financial fine up to $1,000. Selling marijuana or cultivating this drug involves the same class of offense and penalty as possessing the drug, as long as the amount involved does not include more than 20 grams. Selling marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school or designated public area is a felony offense, and can result in a prison term of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $10,000.
