Art Therapy for substance abuse
Art Therapy is used in Residential Addiction Rehab Treatment
When it comes to offering recovery from alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sex addiction and mental health issues, art therapy is a value tool.
Art Therapy combines traditional psycho-therapeutic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the effective properties of the different art materials. Art-based psychotherapy emphasizes the products (drawings, paintings, and other art expressions); resolving conflicts; solving problems; and formulating new perceptions that in turn lead to positive changes, growth, and healing.
The creative process in Art Therapy helps clients to explore their emotions, increase their self-esteem, become more vulnerable in sharing their feelings and in some instances helps to resolve inner trauma. The creative process, in and of itself, can be a health-enhancing and a growth-producing experience. Creating art can be very therapeutic, you can express yourself on a multitude of levels. This can also lead to deep feelings of achievement, and well being.
During an Art Therapy session at Valiant Recovery, you will be asked to express yourself through the use of a variety of different art materials. Art therapy has nothing to do with your artistic ability, or ability to recreate what you see. Your session will be a creative experience, but the goal is to reach within, and express yourself through art. Art in itself is very expressive, and like a dream, it can be very symbolic. Symbolic imagery is a deep form of communication, and a helpful way to discover underlying thoughts and feelings. It is helpful in communicating issues, emotions, and conflicts. It allows you to communicate meaning beyond words , gaining a better understanding of yourself and the way you relate to others.
Our goal through Art Therapy is that you will be able to use creative insight to help you work through some of life’s difficult situations. Art Therapy can help improve your mental health, which will give you better insight into life. It helps enable you to make better decisions, cope better with stress, work through traumatic experiences, increase cognitive abilities and build better relationships.
Recovery from addictions requires a host of new tools to handle the pains of the past and the adversity of the future. Art Therapy has tremendous benefits for lowering stress when triggered to relapse. It can be used as a tool to transform feelings that are otherwise stuck and give them new life in a creative process.
